Even in this day and age, there is still a stigma unfairly attached to the process of wanting to improve your appearance.
Apparently you should ‘grow old gracefully’, you ‘should be grateful for what you have’, you should ‘be happy with what God gave you’.
Yes, all of those are very valid points, and very true, but what if you’re not happy with the way you look in the mirror? What if it ruins every single day and damages your self-confidence to low levels?
In that case, there is a very real reason for changing the things which bother you so much.
If you can’t live with it, if you can’t come to terms with it, and if you can’t learn to love it, and there is something you can do to change it, tear that stigma down and go for it.
Loving Yourself Isn’t as Easy as Natural Self-Acceptance
We live in an age which is more appearance-focused than at any other time.
We aren’t just judged on our jobs, our overall careers, our aims, our dreams, and our views, we’re judged on the way we look and the way we present ourselves to the world. While nobody else’s opinion matters, yours does.
Look at it this way, if you are suddenly fixated on the wrinkles and lines which have appeared over the last few years, and they begin to drag your confidence levels further and further down, how are you supposed to enjoy your life? Part of feeling great on the inside is also about how you look on the outside. It’s not about making anyone else happy with your appearance, it’s about making YOU happy with your appearance.
This is where the stigma becomes confused.
There is something very wrong with changing aspects of your appearance to suit someone else’s view, or to make someone else like you more, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with changing something about your appearance to make yourself feel better.
We are coming up to New Year once more. This is a typical time for making resolutions, promises to ourselves, and deciding we’re going to make sweeping changes in our lives.
